A nomadic family visit near Merzouga: tea and conversation with a herding family by Erg Chebbi, with your guide translating.
We're still finishing the details on this page. Ask us and we'll send you what's included, the timings and the price in writing.
Around Erg Chebbi, out on the stony plains and along the edge of the dunes, some families still make their living herding goats and sheep, and sometimes camels. Most are semi-nomadic now. They may keep a house in a village and move with the animals for part of the year, wherever there's water and grazing. We arrange this visit with families who are happy to have guests. You sit down with them, drink tea and hear about their life in their own words, with your guide translating.
You'll get there by 4x4, or on foot from your desert camp if the family is camped nearby. Home is often a simple shelter of wood, palm fronds and woven cloth, or a tent, with a fire for cooking and tea. Conversation usually stays with everyday life: finding water and carrying it, moving the herds with the seasons, getting the children to school, and how drought and change have shaped life out here. It's basic, and seeing that is part of understanding how the family lives.
The family are your hosts, not a sight to tick off, and what you pay goes to them directly. If you'd like a night closer to their rhythm, look at our nomad camp stay. The visit also fits well with a 4x4 desert excursion around the dunes.
Some move regularly. Many today are semi-nomadic, with a base in a village and part of the year spent moving with the herds. We'll tell you plainly what to expect, and your guide can explain the family's situation.
Ask your guide first. Please don't give sweets or money to children. Things the household can use, like tea, sugar or flour, are sometimes welcome, and your guide will know what makes sense.
Only with permission, and your guide will ask for you. If someone says no, please respect that.
You can, in a simple nomad camp. Our guide to a night with a nomadic family explains what it involves.
